The Lagos social circuit has been thrown into a mourning mood,
occasioned by the tragic death of Wale Lateef Onigbanjo. He died in
London on Wednesday, July 8, 2015. The deceased was the husband of
Maureeen Onigbanjo, ace fashion designer and the CEO of House of
Maufechi. He was aged 56.
We exclusively gathered that, Onigbanjo, the founder of Lakoom
Enterprises, died barely an hour after arriving London. He was said to
have departed for London on that fateful Wednesday, to undergo a medical
check-up.
Onigbanjo, who was fondly called Onyx by his close friends, was
reported to have found himself on the same flight with Diji Vera Cruz,
the prominent Lagos businessman and socialite, who is like an elder
brother to him. Onigbanjo, who showed no sign of illness, was gathered
to have even helped to carry Vera-Cruz’ suitcase.
Sources disclosed that the two men later boarded the same taxi from
the airport. The taxi was booked by Vera-Cruz’ wife, Rosa, the elder
sister of Bola Adesola, the Managing Director of Standard Chartered
Bank.
It was learnt that the taxi had first dropped Vera-Cruz at his home
in Hendon Central, before heading for Onigbanjo’s home in West Hendon.
Tragically though, Onigbanjo arrived at his home, but he never made
it into his house. It was gathered that the businessman slumped and
died, with his suitcase while trying to enter his home, through the back
door. More tragically was the fact that it took many hours before his
family got to know of his death.
Since the news of Wale Onigbanjo’s death broke out, members of his
family and friends have become very inconsolable. His Adeniyi-Jones,
Ikeja residence in Lagos has been playing host to hundreds of
grief-stricken sympathisers.
Onigbanjo is survived by his wife, Maureen, three children and a brother.
